The Next El Fasher

El Obeid Waits Its Turn: The Siege Template Moves to Kordofan

A drone campaign is cutting water, fuel and power to half a million trapped people — and the El Fasher precedent means siege, then massacre, is the realistic case, not the worst one.

The UN human rights chief issued a "red alert" over El Obeid on July 3; verified figures put fifteen drone strikes in three weeks, killing at least forty-five civilians and hitting fuel depots, water stations and power. Some 500,000 people are trapped, roughly 105,000 already displaced, in a city astride the corridor linking RSF-held Darfur to the army-held east. More than 300 were killed along the Bara corridor in the first half of July; famine is confirmed in El Fasher and Kadugli, with twenty other areas at risk.

Assessment: El Obeid is the strategic hinge of the central front. If it falls, the RSF joins its Darfur and Kordofan holdings into a contiguous western statelet — hardening a de facto partition and validating the very facts-on-the-ground sinking the ceasefire talks. El Fasher's fall, followed by documented atrocities, makes siege-then-massacre the template, not the outlier.
