FDD’s Headline Says 32 Gaza Ceasefire Violations; Its Own Text Says IDF Strikes
The Long War Journal’s body paragraph describes 32 strikes conducted by the Israeli military and ceasefire violations from 10 to 31 July. The single example it gives is an Israeli strike.
FDD’s Long War Journal published on 31 July under the headline “Board of Peace announces Hamas disarmament agreement, IDF reports 32 Gaza ceasefire violations July 10–31.” The body reads: “The IDF reported 32 strikes conducted by the Israeli military and ceasefire violations from July 10 to 31: On July 10, the IDF said that it killed Yahya Saeed Muhammad Hamdan, ‘head of a Nukhba squad' in Hamas’s military wing.” The one instance offered is an Israeli operation. The headline converts a figure that on its own text appears to include Israeli military action into a count of violations attributable to Gaza. FDD is a Washington advocacy institution and should be read as one; the defect here, though, is mechanical and checkable against the underlying IDF release, which THE FILES has not obtained. Until it is, the number 32 should not travel.
The same piece carried the sharpest sequencing detail anyone published: the Board of Peace stated that Hamas has committed to relinquish its weapons, “which would be followed by Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.” That is a sequence. Ghazi Hamad of Hamas’s negotiating delegation told Al Jazeera the opposite: “Hamas will not implement any step of the Gaza peace deal if the Israeli occupation forces do not fulfil their obligations under the agreement.” Trump’s own post said the agreement “will be carried out in carefully structured phases,” and separately announced a “HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza” — complete, where the document describes stages. LWJ also cited unnamed US officials, single-sourced and partisan, putting implementation at seven to eight months and acknowledging Israel is “very skeptical.”
Assessment: Two numbers now compete for the reader’s sense of what the past nine months were. Al Jazeera’s own count, published without methodology, puts Palestinians killed by Israeli attacks since 10 October 2025 above 1,100. The only violations figure to reach a headline anywhere in this file is 32. On 1 August, Al Jazeera reported Israeli attacks across Gaza killing at least two and wounding at least ten, hours after the signing; we did not retrieve an equivalent piece from AP, Reuters, the BBC or the Guardian before the research window closed, and that is an untested absence, not a proven omission. Reuters held both halves together on 30 July; its aggregator dropped the three dead and kept the diplomacy.
