A combined casualty figure became a death toll, and the strike count stopped being published

Iranian officials told NBC News that at least four were killed and dozens injured. Iranian officials and the Iranian Red Crescent Society, in an account carried by Outlook India, put it at five killed including a child and more than 60 wounded. Al Jazeera’s live headline reads “at least four,” while its own permalink slug still ends “-killing-five” — the URL preserving a downward revision the headline no longer shows. Separately, foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei wrote on X that more than 50 people were “martyred or wounded.” That is a combined figure, and at least two aggregators appear to have read it as a count of the dead. Gulf News, meanwhile, reported 11 killed across the wider 1 September strike wave. Four, five, eleven, fifty: the same night, four numbers, none independently verified.

Against that instability, set what is no longer being counted. At the time President Trump announced the April 2026 ceasefire, officials put the total at more than 13,000 US strikes in Iran; the War Department stopped publicly updating the figure afterwards, though further rounds have been conducted, according to the Washington Examiner. The Pentagon’s Section 1057 civilian-harm report, submitted to Congress in August 2026, covers three primary incidents in 2025 during Operation Rough Rider against the Houthis — 153 civilians killed and 243 injured. That is a Yemen number and should not be slid across to Iran. On Sirik itself, the Iranian Red Crescent said the incident “raises serious concerns under international humanitarian law and warrants an independent, impartial, thorough, and effective investigation.” Reza Shahidiyan, governor of Sirik county, told state broadcaster IRIB the wounded were taken to hospital in nearby Minab and were “in stable condition.”

Two items circulating with the story do not carry weight and should be handled as what they are. Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X that “if a power acts like Satan, picks targets like Satan, and kills like Satan, it’s Satan” — rhetoric from a senior politician, not evidence about the strike. Video published by the semi-official Fars agency shows an unnamed child survivor saying “everyone was just ordinary civilians”; it is single-sourced to a semi-official Iranian outlet, the subject is unnamed, and The Files found no outlet that verified the footage. The one figure Western reporters could check by standing still: AP journalists watched the USS Abraham Lincoln dock at Laem Chabang in Thailand on 2 September with roughly 5,000 service members aboard after more than 250 days at sea.

Assessment: The reporting problem here is not bias, it is custody. Every number in circulation belongs to a party with an interest in it, and the one institution with the capability to produce an independent count has stopped publishing the series it used to publish. The cessation is the more telling datum than the 13,000. Watch for two failure modes over the coming days: “martyred or wounded” hardening into fifty dead in secondary and aggregated copy, and the Section 1057 Yemen totals migrating into Iran stories as though they described this campaign. Both are propagation errors rather than lies, which is what makes them durable.
