Army announces Kordofan gains and an RSF defection while nobody reports from inside El Obeid
A commander’s video statement, a locality headquarters taken, a roster of defectors that repeats names from previous months — and no independent account of the city all of it is pointed at.
Anadolu Agency reported within the last 24 hours that Mohammed Azraq al-Fanjari, described as commander of the RSF’s Special Tasks Group, had announced his defection with 300 officers and soldiers, relinquishing all duties within the force. The primary evidence is a video statement circulated on Sudanese media; there is no independent headcount. The pipeline of such announcements is steady — Anadolu reported 21 commanders and 270 fighters around 20 August, hundreds more around 1 September, 200 more days later — and the rosters overlap. Ali Rizqallah, named in September, is very likely the Ali “Al-Savanna” Rizq reported as defecting in May; Al-Nour Ahmed Adam appears to be the Major General al-Nour Adam “Qubba” reported in April. Any cumulative total in circulation is probably double-counting. The RSF has not commented on prior rounds, which neither confirms nor refutes.
On the ground, Sudans Post reported from El Obeid that the military took Mazroub, administrative headquarters of West Bara locality in North Kordofan, on Friday 2 October. Radio Tamazuj reported in mid-September that the army said it had captured 11 areas in the state. Every one of these is an army claim, announced with official video and no recorded RSF response. Bara city itself has changed hands in the reporting at least twice this year — RSF in March, an announced SAF recapture in late July — and Mazroub is not Bara. This desk found no reporting from inside El Obeid in the 48-hour window.
Assessment: The absence is the finding. Advances are being announced in the direction of a city under siege, and there is no current independent account of conditions inside it. Al Jazeera was asking in July whether El Obeid would become the next El Fasher; three months on, the question has gone quiet without being answered. Treat the defection figures as a propaganda series rather than a trendline: their function is to signal RSF disintegration to Washington and Cairo at exactly the moment Burhan is arguing that negotiation is unnecessary. The one-year mark on El Fasher’s fall arrives this month. It should be marked with reporting, not a recap.
