Cross-Border Drone War

Abyei market strike kills at least 153 as Sudan’s drone war crosses two borders

A single strike on a market in the disputed Abyei region produced the deadliest incident of the week. The event is confirmed by multiple wires; who launched the drone is not.

A drone struck Amiet market — rendered “Alneam market” in Reuters caption text — in the disputed Abyei region on the Sudan–South Sudan border on Monday 19 October, around 11:00 local time. The strike hit or ignited a nearby fuel depot, and the fire was still burning the following day. France 24 reported more than 150 dead on 20 October; Al Jazeera, carrying AP and Reuters material, put the toll at at least 153 on 21 October, still rising. Médecins Sans Frontières said it was treating 20 wounded, some with severe burns. “We have recorded 153 deaths,” said Johanna Akol Ngor, described by France 24 as an acting local official. The attribution of the strike to the Sudanese Armed Forces rests on statements by South Sudanese local and national officials. No wire reviewed for this brief has independently established which party launched the drone.

The individual toll matters less than the tempo and the geography. On 17 October the SAF said it had killed dozens of RSF fighters at Nyala; the RSF said the army killed 30 civilians at a livestock market there — both are party claims, neither independently verified. The Council on Foreign Relations' conflict tracker logs a market strike at Al-Dibab, West Kordofan, on 18 October with at least 80 killed, and describes the 19 October strikes in Khartoum that killed three children as “unattributed,” its own word. The Kordofan Observatory, a local monitor, reported a drone strike on a civilian vehicle near Ankoush killing four. On 20 October, Sudan Tribune reported — so far singly — that a strike near Tine, inside Chadian territory, killed five Sudanese refugees including two aid workers. The National counted more than 250 dead across the week’s strikes.

Assessment: Two of the week’s strikes landed outside Sudan’s undisputed territory — in Abyei and inside Chad — and that pattern, not any single toll, is the development. Both belligerents fly drones, both deny civilian targeting, and the result is an attribution vacuum that local officials fill within hours and wires cannot close for weeks. Read every number here as provisional: tracker entries aggregate wire copy rather than report it, and party-issued tolls from Nyala move in opposite directions by design. NPR, citing INSO data, found North Kordofan recorded more drone attacks than any other Sudanese state in 2026 — the weapon has become the war’s main instrument, and it is the least accountable one.
