Third Day in Doha

Iranian negotiators spend a third day in Doha as Washington votes on Tuesday

Abbas Araqchi says the indirect talks are “ongoing and progressing.” What has been reported so far is an opening position, not a text, and almost every account of the mechanics rests on unnamed officials.

Iranian negotiators were in Doha on Sunday 1 November for a third consecutive day of indirect talks with Qatari mediators aimed at ending a war now eight months old, dated to 28 February 2026. The sequence, as reported: Qatari mediators in Tehran on Friday 30 October, a session Axios put at more than twelve hours; the venue moving to Doha on Saturday, where CBS reported Qatari and Pakistani mediators met with an Iranian delegation. Reuters attributes the existence and duration of the talks to “an official briefed on the discussions,” with CNBC, CBS and Axios each citing their own unnamed sources — convergence, not confirmation. The claim that the Doha track is coordinated in regular contact with Washington rests on that single Reuters source alone. Araqchi, on the record on Sunday, said: “We are doing our best in this process, and we hope that there is rationality on the other side so that they prioritise diplomacy over other paths.”

The terms are softer still. A Reuters/AAP version carried by the Newcastle Herald describes an Iranian opening offer of a region-wide ceasefire, an end to the US naval blockade, sanctions relief on Iranian oil and the release of frozen assets, in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and talks on a comprehensive agreement. No party has confirmed that on the record. A parallel nuclear element — the return of IAEA inspectors, reported by Axios, and a modest Iranian concession reported by the Jerusalem Post on two regional diplomats — is the weakest claim in circulation and should be treated as such. The picture is not uniform: CBS’s live blog carries an item headed “Iran has no plans for talks with U.S., foreign minister says” alongside items describing active negotiation. Reuters copy carried by Al-Monitor reports Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei ordering the armed forces on Saturday to be ready for any attack.

Assessment: The clock, not the text, is doing the work. Trump has said there will be no new US strikes before Tuesday’s vote; that is a calendar truce, and it expires on its own. At an Iowa rally on Sunday he predicted the war would end “very soon” and “one way or the other,” called higher oil prices a “small” sacrifice, and — per Gulf News — said the US still has one or two targets to take care of. Read the Iranian opening offer as what it is: everything on the table for the one asset Tehran controls. Distrust the nuclear sweetener until the IAEA says it itself. And note what Qatar is mediating with — see below.
