Jordan confirmed eight interceptions at dawn and pointedly did not confirm the target
The IRGC said it hit two US bases in Jordan in retaliation for Larak. Amman’s own statement stops short of that, and the claim that US forces came under fire rests on one Fox correspondent and one anonymous source.
Early on Monday 31 August the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement that it had attacked two US military bases in Jordan in response to “the US-Israeli enemy’s attack on Larak Island.” The Jordanian Armed Forces spokesman, in a statement carried by the state news agency Petra, said only that “air defense systems intercepted eight missiles that breached the Kingdom’s airspace at dawn today, Monday,” framing the interceptions as flowing from Jordan’s “national responsibility to protect Jordan’s airspace” under established rules of engagement. The gap between the two statements is the story: Amman confirmed incoming fire over its territory and eight interceptions, and did not confirm what the missiles were aimed at. The IRGC had already promised “response and punishment” on Sunday via state broadcaster IRIB, and gave no casualty toll for Larak.
The assertion that US bases were actually under attack entered the record through Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst — “US forces in Jordan are under missile attack” — supported by a “US source familiar with the situation” who told Fox that nearly all the missiles were intercepted. The Jerusalem Post then carried it onward. That is one correspondent plus one anonymous source, republished by a second partisan outlet, and it is currently the whole evidentiary basis for the claim. Separately, Iran’s Press TV reported missile launches at US ships in the Strait of Hormuz; The Files found no corroboration. An aggregator, investinglive.com, described launches from “four provinces” and then listed five, and claimed a public CENTCOM rebuttal we could not verify. Ebrahim Azizi, who chairs the Iranian parliament’s national security commission, posted in English on Sunday: “Test our will once more, and pay a heavier price. Retaliation is coming; JUST RUN!”
Assessment: Watch the verb drift over the next 24 hours. “IRGC says it struck two US bases” and “US bases in Jordan came under attack” are different claims with different proof burdens, and the second is the one that travels. Jordan’s careful wording is doing work: confirming an airspace violation obliges nothing, confirming a target on Jordanian soil implicates the kingdom in someone else’s war. Treat the absence of an on-record CENTCOM statement as information, not delay — Capt. Hawkins was quotable within hours on Larak. Reuters shipping data, cited in Iran International’s liveblog, counted five commodity transits a day through Hormuz over the weekend, and warned that some vessels are running with transponders off. That is a floor, not a count.
