Six days after the SDF dissolved, Syria’s state agency is publishing the official version of how it happened
SANA has run two retrospectives inside the window structuring the Kurdish-led force’s absorption as an orderly process. The operational questions — who now holds the ISIS detention camps — remain unreported.
Mazloum Abdi announced the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces on 25 August, following their integration into the Syrian army. That event is confirmed across Al Jazeera, France 24, Asharq Al-Awsat, Euronews, Haaretz, Gulf News, The New Arab and FDD’s Long War Journal. What falls inside the past 48 hours is not new fact but new framing: SANA, the Syrian state news agency, published “Five key stages mark Syria’s 17-month SDF integration process” on or about 29 August, following “From agreement to dissolution: The SDF’s 17-month integration process” on 27 August. These are state retrospectives issued four and six days after the announcement, presenting the absorption as a five-stage process concluded successfully. The 17-month frame dates the process to the March 2025 Damascus–SDF agreement and, in doing so, writes out the intervals of stalemate and pressure between the two dates.
The dissolution of a force is a paper event. The operational one is unreported in what this desk has retrieved: whether YPG cadres are absorbed as intact units or as individuals, what becomes of the Asayish and the internal security file in the north-east, and above all who now holds al-Hol and the ISIS detention facilities. Abdi’s actual words have not been obtained in the original; every English account is a rewrite. The Kurdish-aligned agencies in the north-east have not been reached for the ground-level account, which is a gap this desk names rather than papers over.
Assessment: A state agency publishing a five-stage chronology of its own consolidation, days after the fact, is making a legitimacy argument in the register of a news report. Cite SANA on this as a state source every time and do not adopt its stage-numbering; the tidiness is the point. The consequential question is custodial. A force with international counter-ISIS funding and a detainee population has been dissolved into a national army now being courted by Washington, and nobody has published what changed at the camp gates. Until that is reported, the integration is announced, not verified.
