Netanyahu tells his generals that toppling Tehran is now the central mission

At a Rosh Hashanah toast with the IDF General Staff Forum in Tel Aviv on 3 September, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described bringing down the Iranian government as Israel’s “central mission that still lies ahead of us, but it is close.” The Times of Israel, which carried the remarks as a standalone and inside its 3 September liveblog, quotes him saying the regime “is now faltering. It is weaker than ever. It is fighting for its survival,” and framing the objective as “to remove this threat once and for all – in other words, to topple this regime.” The event was public, photographed by the Government Press Office (Haim Zach). A further line circulating in English — “Don’t mess with us… We have the strength, the determination and the internal unity to defeat you” — reached us only through ZeroHedge and a scraper mirror, not through any Israeli original, and should be treated as unverified.

A day later in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump said the United States “may hit Pickaxe very soon,” conditioning it on detected activity at the deeply buried site near the damaged Natanz enrichment plant. “We’re in five months now,” he said, adding of Iranian radar crews, “I think they’re tired of putting it in and getting blown up,” and “we know everybody that’s moving at Pickaxe.” Al Jazeera notes he first issued the same warning in mid-July; the news is the repetition. The Jerusalem Post ran it as straight news. Israel National News led its 5 September homepage with the warning — and with Trump calling the fighting a limited “military conflict.” Vice President JD Vance, in the same window, said “I wouldn’t call it a war.” Defence Minister Israel Katz, speaking on 2 September at a conference hosted by Ynet and Yedioth Ahronoth, told the audience Israeli forces were ready for an Iranian attack over the High Holidays, which begin the evening of 11 September: “For now, they are striking throughout the region except us.”

Assessment: Two governments are describing one campaign in incompatible registers. Jerusalem’s is teleological — a regime that falls, a mission that ends. Washington’s is custodial — a site that may be struck, a conflict that is not a war, 18 Americans dead by Trump’s own correction of his commerce secretary, 87 vessels stopped. Note also that the regime-collapse claim is not new: Netanyahu said the same thing on 2 June at Roman Gofman’s installation at Mossad. A toast to the General Staff is a statement of intent, not an operational order, and the only element of this file open to outside verification is the earth above Pickaxe Mountain — not Iranian politics.
