The Missing Agent

Abbas was denied a US visa for the second year running, and the headlines mostly removed the denier

The Associated Press put the visa in its headline in the passive voice with no government attached. PBS left it out of its article headline and named the United States only on its day page.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, 90, addressed the General Assembly by pre-recorded video on Thursday after the Trump administration barred him from entering the United States — the second consecutive year he has been compelled to speak by video. The AP headline reads: “Palestinian president, again denied a visa to speak at UN, addresses leaders on prerecorded video.” The denial is there; the government that issued it is not. PBS NewsHour’s article page — “WATCH: Palestinian President Abbas addresses 2026 UN General Assembly” — leaves the visa out of the headline entirely, while reporting that Abbas told the assembly Palestinians in Gaza face a “genocidal war” and described an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.” PBS’s own live day page was blunter than its article: “The United States denied him a visa.” Middle East Eye led instead on Abbas’s words: “Do not allow another Nakba.”

The larger claim went unheadlined everywhere retrieved. Middle East Eye reports that the ban applies not only to Abbas but to all Palestinian officials and to Palestinian civil society entities that have worked with the International Court of Justice or the International Criminal Court. That rests, in what was retrieved here, on a single outlet’s live-blog line, with no State Department text or Federal Register notice attached; it should not be treated as established. Abbas’s own response — “We reject these unlawful punitive…” — survives only as a truncated quotation. One mechanical artefact is easier to verify: CBC’s page at the slug “mahmoud-abbas-united-nations-general-assembly” now carries the headline “Netanyahu rejects genocide allegations in Gaza after mass walkout at his UN speech.” A page built as the Abbas story was reassigned to the Netanyahu story.

Assessment: Agentless passive is not usually a conspiracy; it is a house-style habit that shortens headlines and softens edges. But it is not distributed evenly. A state action by the United States against the president of an observer state — repeated in consecutive years, and possibly extended to civil society bodies that approached the ICJ and ICC — is precisely the kind of decision that ought to keep its subject. The test to run is the mirror: whether the same desks would write that a rival capital’s opponent was “again denied a visa.” On the broader ban, hold the line — one live-blog paragraph is not a document. Ask for the primary text.
