Three Hops From The Source

A Wall Street Journal story on Trump and Iran hardened from “expects” to “prepares” within two hours

The Journal reported Trump had rejected Tehran’s seven-day Hormuz proposal. By the third relay the attribution had fallen off the headline and intent had become action.

The proposal itself arrived carefully hedged. The National in Abu Dhabi ran it on 23 September with scare quotes inside the headline — Iran “presents US with road map for regionwide ceasefire and Hormuz reopening” — marking it as a claim rather than a confirmed event. AP, carried on 25 September by PBS NewsHour, ClickOrlando and US News, used “suggested” and “proposes” and kept the conditionality in the headline: a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in seven days “if the US meets its conditions.” Al Jazeera ran two versions hours apart, the second attributing explicitly — “Iran says it awaits US response on seven-day roadmap to end war.” CBS News, in its rolling Iran file, was the first in this sample to attach a motive to Tehran’s side: a deal sought before the US midterms.

Then on the morning of 26 September the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump had rejected the proposal and expected to resume strikes after the midterms. The Times of Israel carried it as “— WSJ.” Devdiscourse kept “WSJ reports.” Tribune India kept “Report.” Yahoo News stated it flat: “Trump Rejects Iran Ceasefire, Expects Bombing to Resume After Midterms.” Business Standard dropped the attribution and changed the verb — “prepares for military escalation” — converting a reported expectation into a described action. No outlet in the chain has independent sourcing, and there is no on-the-record US statement confirming the rejection.

Assessment: Two things in this file cannot both be current. Al Jazeera has Iran still awaiting a US answer roughly three hours before the Journal item lands saying the answer was no. One is stale and the aggregators reprinting both have not noticed. Note also what nobody flagged: this is the fourth iteration of the same pattern. Trump called an Iranian ceasefire proposal “garbage” in May, Axios reported mediators pushing another in July, and each time the rejection was reported as a turn rather than a repetition. The Journal’s scoop may be accurate. The chain carrying it has no way of knowing that, which is precisely why the attribution should have survived to the third hop.
