Drones hit one of Sudan’s main fuel depots 20km from Wad Madani

Drones struck the Um Aleila fuel depot near Abu Haraz, roughly 20km north-east of Wad Madani, in the early hours of Sunday 27 September. Residents of adjacent villages told Radio Tamazuj and Sudan Tribune they heard several loud blasts shortly after dawn prayers, followed by thick black smoke rising from storage tanks across the complex. Videos circulating online showed flames in parts of the depot while Civil Defence teams worked the blaze; Dabanga reported that Civil Defence said it contained the fire and prevented it from spreading, with damage limited to the petrol and diesel tanks. Sudan Tribune describes Um Aleila as one of Sudan’s primary petroleum reserves and a critical hub for storing and distributing gasoline and diesel across the agricultural state of Al Jazirah. The depot was damaged and looted once before, during the RSF’s takeover of Wad Madani in December 2023.

Attribution is where the reporting thins. Sudan Tribune states RSF responsibility but sources it to Sudanese security sources; Radio Tamazuj’s own photo caption describes only “a drone strike attributed to the Rapid Support Forces”; the RSF could not be reached for comment and has not claimed it. One named resident, Awad Ahmed, told Radio Tamazuj that a powerful explosion shook the area after dawn prayers and that two drones came down in the Wad al-Bar al-Khawalida area, west of Al Jazirah — a shootdown claim that rests on a single civilian account and has not been corroborated. Separately, the Sudanese Armed Forces said on Thursday that its air defences downed an FH-95 drone north-east of El Kokiti in North Kordofan, the second of that type it claimed to have downed in the week, according to Dabanga. No wreckage verification was published.

Assessment: The fire is not the story; the geography is. Al Jazirah is rear area, and bulk fuel storage 20km from a state capital is a logistics target, not a battlefield one — the point of hitting it is to raise the cost of moving SAF formations into Kordofan, where the actual fighting is. Watch the measurable consequence rather than the footage: pump prices and supply out of Wad Madani over the next 48 to 72 hours will say whether Civil Defence’s containment claim holds. The FH-95 claim matters only if SAF produces serials. Without wreckage it is a belligerent’s press line; with it, it becomes an arms-embargo file.
