Abu Dhabi, Two Ways

The UAE confirms hosting Netanyahu, then condemns Ben Gvir — and Ynet retracts a Saudi claim in 48 hours

WAM verified the Abu Dhabi meeting; a senior Saudi official denied any Saudi representative attended, and Ynet corrected its own summit report.

The confirmed core is narrow. The Emirati state news agency WAM confirmed that President Mohamed bin Zayed met Netanyahu in the UAE on Sunday 27 September, a confirmation Euronews carried on 29 September. Everything built on top of it moved fast. Ynet reported a “secret Gulf summit” on Iran and the Houthis, attributed to sources; the Prime Minister’s Office denied a related AP report as “Fake news,” saying the visit “focused solely on strengthening relations between the two countries and on regional challenges.” A senior Saudi official then denied that any Saudi representative attended, and Ynet issued a correction to its initial report — which had not cited a source — saying it could not confirm the meeting took place. ToI’s 28 September liveblog had carried the softer version: Netanyahu reportedly met officials from Middle Eastern countries without ties to Israel.

Two details deserve separating out. Ynet noted that the PMO’s denial quoted the heads of the Shin Bet and the Mossad, David Zini and Roman Gofman — both Netanyahu appointees — criticising an Israeli media outlet by name; serving intelligence chiefs deployed in a press dispute during a campaign is not routine. And two days after hosting Netanyahu, the UAE “strongly condemned” National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s visit to the Temple Mount compound on Monday 28 September. ToI records that Ben Gvir, who oversees the Israel Police, has repeatedly declared Jewish prayer is now permitted at the site despite statements to the contrary from Netanyahu. Separately, Haaretz reported on 29 September, citing the Italian paper Il Foglio, that Netanyahu met Saddam Haftar, son of the general who controls eastern Libya — one foreign outlet, with no Israeli confirmation and no denial on record.

Assessment: This is the normalisation-claim cycle in miniature, and it is worth filing as a method rather than a scoop. An unsourced Gulf-summit report appears in a major Israeli outlet, travels internationally, is denied by a Gulf official and retracted by the outlet inside 48 hours — while the one element with a state seal on it, the WAM confirmation, remains modest. The asymmetry is the point: the claim outruns the correction. Abu Dhabi, meanwhile, is demonstrating the terms of the relationship — meet the prime minister, condemn his national security minister — and doing both on the record. Hold the Haftar item at one foreign outlet until an Israeli source touches it.
