A Newsroom Taken Whole

Egypt detains the entire staff of a fact-checking site, then calls them Brotherhood members

Six journalists from the digital platform Matsadaash were taken in the week of 28 September. On 1 October the Interior Ministry said they belonged to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and took foreign money.

Egyptian police detained six journalists — the whole editorial team of Matsadaash (”Don’t Believe”), a fact-checking and investigative platform operating since 2018 — in the week of 28 September. On Thursday 1 October the Interior Ministry said the six were members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood and had produced fabricated news for an unlicensed online page in exchange for funding from abroad, and that legal procedures had been initiated. The ministry described the platform as “unlicensed”, according to Asharq Al-Awsat. The outlet denies the allegation and has pointed to its own published work refuting disinformation in Brotherhood-linked media. Co-founder Abdelrahman Mansour told the Associated Press he and the detainees' families have no knowledge of their whereabouts. The detention count and the identification of the full newsroom come from the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.

The arrests and the ministry’s accusation are confirmed by the AP wire and by The National and Asharq Al-Awsat. The content of the accusation is not: no evidence of Brotherhood membership or of foreign funding has been produced publicly, and the charge stands as a state assertion. Egypt proscribed the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation in 2013, which makes membership a criminal category available for use against almost any defendant the state chooses. Cairo’s State Information Service welcomed the United States designation of Brotherhood chapters on 13 January 2026, when the State Department listed the Lebanese branch as a foreign terrorist organisation and Treasury designated the Egyptian and Jordanian chapters as specially designated global terrorists.

Assessment: This is the week’s clearest demonstration that a Brotherhood designation functions domestically before it functions as counter-terrorism. The accusation against Matsadaash is not a claim about violence; it is a claim about funding and publication, which is exactly the terrain European interior ministries have moved onto and exactly the terrain Florida’s packet occupies. The test to watch is procedural, not rhetorical: whether the six are ordered into 15-day renewable pretrial detention and under which case number. If the file stays open and the evidence stays unpublished, the charge was the instrument. International press-freedom groups had issued no statement we could verify by Saturday.
