From Cockpit to Campaign

An Ax in the Cockpit Becomes an Israeli Election Story in Four Days

A flydubai co-pilot’s attack on his captain en route to Tel Aviv has moved, in the Israeli press, from aviation incident to security-failure file to campaign ammunition — with most of the load-bearing claims still anonymous.

On Wednesday 30 September the flydubai Dubai–Tel Aviv service made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after the co-pilot attacked the captain and tried to put the aircraft down; the captain, Indian national Smit Machchhar, was wounded but unlocked the cockpit door and passengers and crew subdued the attacker, per CBS/AP, CNBC and CNN. The forensic detail has come from the Gulf, not from Israel: the Washington Post reported on Saturday that UAE officials say the co-pilot, named as Hamam al-Hammami, used a crash ax and had been praying immediately before. The Post’s further claim that he had been barred from flying with Oman Air over his views rests on a single person “familiar with the matter.” Dubai’s crown prince visited Machchhar in hospital on 3 October, praising him for “embodying the highest degrees of courage,” per the Times of Israel liveblog.

Inside Israel the story has become a screening story. The Times of Israel’s Sunday top line — “Regev passes buck on probing pilots as Israel said ‘racing' to ID potential threats,” under a deck quoting sources on a “colossal security screw-up” — names Transportation Minister Miri Regev; the characterisation is an anonymous leak, not a finding. Haaretz ran the same frame in analysis. Gadi Eisenkot, the former IDF chief of staff now leading Yashar, converted it on X on 3 October: “Those who fear the word ‘responsibility' and flee from investigating the truth since October 7… are endangering Israel every day,” adding that “180 Israelis were saved” in “a terrible failure under the October 7 government.” That 180 is Eisenkot’s campaign figure; no independent manifest count has surfaced.

Assessment: Note who is supplying what. The UAE supplies method and custody; Israeli officials supply motive — Netanyahu told Fox the man was “suicidal” and had “underwent Islamic radical indoctrination,” Katz called it “an attempted jihadist terror attack,” and an unnamed official told the Post he had “the motive to kill Jews.” The one claim that would change the strategic picture came from Washington: Trump said an Iran link was, “based on what I’m hearing,” yes. Netanyahu, a day later, said Israel still does not know whether the man acted alone. When the Israeli prime minister declines to ratify a US presidential assertion about Iran twenty-three days before a vote he is fighting on security, the silence is the information.
