The Premium That Isn’t

Eighteen ship attacks in twelve days, and Brent is down two percent on the month

The IRGC claims three vessels in two days, CENTCOM claims 19 million barrels escorted in one. The oil market is declining to adjudicate between them.

The attack tempo is not in dispute. Democracy Now, citing UKMTO, reported an oil tanker struck by a projectile while exiting the strait on Monday with all crew safe, the IRGC claiming it as the third ship it had hit in two days, and at least 18 attacks on shipping in or around Hormuz since the start of October. The National counted at least 12 tankers attacked in a single week, with UKMTO confirming six vessel strikes on one Sunday alone. CNN, which published its analysis on 11 October, likewise reported six commercial vessels struck that day. Iran International’s liveblog records a tanker and a container ship hit by unknown projectiles on Tuesday, per separate UKMTO notices citing verified sources. Reuters, citing two senior Iranian officials, reports Tehran shifted to different offensive tactics against vessels it deems in violation of its restrictions around 3 October — a change those officials tie directly to the rise in strikes.

Against that, CENTCOM said the US helped move 19 million barrels through Hormuz on Monday, and Trump says more oil is passing through the strait than before the war. Both are belligerent claims about their own performance. The specialist series is less dramatic in either direction: Lloyd’s List Intelligence counted 124 total transits in the week to 8 October against 122 in the comparison week of 14–20 September, with tanker and gas carrier transits at 106 against 100 and westbound movements — which Lloyd’s List reads as “a useful indicator of owner and operator confidence” — at 63 against 58. Prices have followed the specialist data rather than the headlines. TradingEconomics' CFD tracker put Brent at $106.51 on 14 October, up 0.77% on the day but down 2.06% over the month, and 72.04% above a year ago.

Assessment: The year-on-year figure is the war; the month-on-month figure is the market’s verdict on this fortnight. Traders appear to have concluded that attacks on hulls are not the same as closure of the strait, and that escorted convoys plus a damaged office tower do not subtract barrels. That judgement is testable and could be wrong — crew casualties, insurance withdrawal or a single catastrophic LNG hit would reprice it fast. Note also what the Lloyd’s List series cannot yet settle: its 12 October brief, covering the surge itself, has not been retrieved. Until it is, both Tehran’s claim of control and CENTCOM’s claim of throughput remain self-reported.
