Two Positions, Six Days

Trump says the midterms have no impact on Iran, a week after promising no strikes before them

The president told reporters a decision is coming “soon” and that the 3 November vote carries no weight. On 8 October, the Associated Press timestamped the opposite commitment.

Speaking on the South Lawn on Tuesday before departing for Alaska, Trump said: “Iran is a failed country. They have no economy. They have 300 percent inflation. They have no money. They’re not paying their troops. They’re not paying anybody. We’ll make a decision on Iran soon.” Asked by a reporter whether the 3 November vote could change his thinking, he replied, per the Times of Israel’s liveblog: “No, it has no impact.” He added that “if you want to see trouble, let [Iran] have a nuclear weapon... that’ll be real trouble.” Six days earlier, the Associated Press carried the opposite line, timestamped 8 October, 1:34 PM ET: “Trump says US will not resume military strikes on Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.” The GlobalSecurity.org war tracker records Brent moving from about $105 to about $103 on that statement. One of the two positions is now inoperative and nobody has said which.

Running underneath is a reported attempt to set the clock from Jerusalem. Israeli television reported Tuesday that Benjamin Netanyahu urged Trump to renew the fighting against Iran before Israel’s 27 October election and the US midterms a week later, and that Trump told him to “go ahead and prepare” without committing to approving an attack. The Prime Minister’s Office denies the report, which reaches this desk second-hand through the Times of Israel’s summary of an unnamed broadcaster. It is a claim about a conversation, denied by one participant’s office, and should be read as nothing more until a wire stands it up. Trump separately said he had spoken with the Saudi Crown Prince, per an aggregator paraphrase of the same remarks; NPR reported earlier in the week that he planned to.

Assessment: “A decision soon” is doing concealment work, not disclosure work. Nothing in the record specifies whether the decision concerns resumed strikes, a tightened blockade or a return to the Islamabad track — the memorandum signed in June, per the House of Commons Library, gave a 60-day extendable window covering navigation, enrichment and sanctions. Ambiguity is cheap and it is also the only instrument that does not require a military commitment during an election month. The reversal on midterm timing matters less as a contradiction than as evidence that both statements were tactical. Price the policy from what moves in the Gulf, not from the South Lawn.
