Epic Fury, Round Two

Trump floats a second Epic Fury while his Syria envoy says a weekend strike is possible

At a Florida rally on Friday the president raised the prospect of renewed US action against Iran; hours earlier Tom Barrack had told an online interviewer a strike this weekend was “absolutely” possible.

Speaking at a midterm campaign rally at Alico Arena on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus in Fort Myers on Friday 23 October, President Donald Trump said: “We may do another little Epic Fury, or they’ll agree. If they’re smart, they’ll just say, ‘Let’s get down to business.'” The fuller construction, including “or they’ll agree,” is carried by NTD; France 24 and Fox News carry the shorter form. The reference is to the joint US–Israeli operation that opened the war at the end of February. Fox News’s live file logs Trump touting both Epic Fury and Operation Midnight Hammer, asserting that Midnight Hammer destroyed Iran’s enrichment capability, defending his withdrawal from the JCPOA, and pointing to Iranian inflation as evidence that pressure is working. The remarks were on camera and have been reported by France 24, NTD, Fox News, Ynet and TWZ.

The rally line followed an interview earlier on Friday in which Tom Barrack — US Ambassador to Turkey and special envoy to Syria and Iraq — was asked by the online commentator Mario Nawfal whether there could be a strike this weekend and answered: “Absolutely.” Asked about it by reporters, Trump said: “He is a powerful man, I guess. If that’s the case, I don’t know anything about it.” What sits underneath is unresolved. TWZ reports Trump has said the war will end “immediately after the election” and, secondhand and unattributed, that he has told aides he expects to resume strikes after the midterms. CNBC reports US officials told the New York Times that Washington and Israel have plans for fresh strikes afterwards. The Council on Foreign Relations conflict tracker logs, under 22–23 October, an item headed “Trump Reportedly Blocked Israeli Plan for Renewed Iran Strikes.” The two threads are in direct tension and neither underlying report is on the record.

Assessment: Read Barrack’s remark for what it is: an ambassador to Turkey with a Syria and Iraq portfolio speculating to an online interviewer, not a man reading from a targeting folder. Trump’s “I don’t know anything about it” preserves deniability in both directions — it neither confirms planning nor forecloses it. That ambiguity is itself the instrument. With Brent at a six-month high and the strait already unreliable, the threat of a second operation does work in the energy market that the operation itself would not have to do. Distrust any account of post-midterm intentions sourced to aides; the blocked-Israeli-plan item and the fresh-strikes item cannot both be the full picture.
