A Loyalty Test in Michigan

Eight days from a Senate vote, the Brotherhood is a campaign instrument with no produced evidence

Mike Rogers has accused Abdul El-Sayed of adopting Muslim Brotherhood ideology since the day after the August primary. PolitiFact and the Detroit News both found the record does not support it.

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary on 4 August 2026. On 5 August, Republican nominee Mike Rogers — a former FBI agent and congressman — said El-Sayed had “pledged his support to the Muslim Brotherhood.” At the 21 October debate, answering a question on police funding, Rogers said: “[El-Sayed] was passionate about defunding the police. As a matter of fact, he asked the Muslim Brotherhood, excuse me, head Morsi in Egypt, to defund the police there, too.” The reference is to a 2012 letter reported by the Washington Free Beacon that El-Sayed allegedly signed. On 23 October, eleven days before the 3 November vote, both men sat separately with Bret Baier on Fox’s Special Report in Detroit; Rogers doubled down. “He has adopted the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood,” he told Fox. President Donald Trump has said El-Sayed is “100%” affiliated with the group.

The documentary record runs the other way. PolitiFact, on 19 October, checked Rogers' claim that El-Sayed had not disavowed the Brotherhood and found video showing he did. The Detroit News, auditing the race on 23 October, wrote that El-Sayed “has repeatedly denied any ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and disavowed the organization” and that “no evidence has been produced to show he has had any affiliation.” NewsNation reported that Rogers' campaign asserts El-Sayed took donations from people connected to the Brotherhood and embraced its ideology “without publicly presenting evidence.” El-Sayed, at a town hall around 15 October, compared the accusation to the dual-loyalty charges once made against John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama. Polls show him with a slight lead in a race the Detroit News calls crucial to Senate control.

Assessment: This is the clearest case available that the US designation question has come loose from the organisation it names. Executive Order 14362 was signed in November 2025 and three chapters were designated in January 2026; none of that architecture is what is being invoked in Michigan. What is being invoked is a word that now functions as a loyalty test, applicable to any Muslim American candidate without an evidentiary burden attaching to the accuser. The test of good faith is narrow and falls due this week: whether Rogers' campaign produces the donor records it has asserted, and whether the Free Beacon publishes the 2012 letter in full. Absent both by 3 November, read the charge as what the calendar suggests it is.
