Convoy Arithmetic

A reported 1,107 tankers reach Bamako, which measures the blockade rather than its defeat

APA and Seneweb carried the convoy figure on 27–28 October. The number of trucks that must move at once is itself the evidence of how little moves alone.

APA reported that a convoy of 1,107 fuel tankers arrived in Bamako, with the item carried in French by Seneweb as “Mali : Un convoi de 1107 camions-citernes remplis de carburant débarque à Bamako,” timestamped roughly 27–28 October. We could not open either article. We do not have the corridor used, the escort arrangement, the volume in litres, the arrival date, or whether the figure was counted independently or relayed from a state announcement — a distinction that decides whether this is a supply measurement or a claim about army capacity. The baseline: JNIM has interdicted fuel into landlocked Mali since 3 September 2025, with more than 300 tankers destroyed. Rio Times, reporting earlier this year, described a siege without a frontline and said the junta’s Russian Africa Corps and Turkish drones had failed to break it. Benin Web TV reported in early September that fuel and electricity were available again in Bamako while supply elsewhere remained erratic.

The month’s other unresolved claim is Kidal. An Al Jazeera opinion column published 28 October states that Wagner fighters and Malian troops captured the northern town in November 2023, lost it to the Front de Libération de l’Azawad in April 2026, and that on 6 October Russian-backed forces regained it after an air campaign. That is an opinion column, not Al Jazeera’s news desk, and the Malian army’s own communiqué and the FLA’s statement — the two primary documents, both party claims — have not surfaced in our material. The Soufan Center nonetheless built its 28 October IntelBrief around Kidal. Separately, Human Rights Watch published “Mali: Military Attacks on Civilians, Insurgent Abuses” on 19 October, and Amnesty International published a piece by its Sahel researcher Ousmane Diallo on 14 October warning of continuing killings, torture and possible war crimes.

Assessment: Read the convoy the way a logistician would. A single column of 1,107 tankers is not a supply chain; it is a military operation that can only be mounted occasionally, because the escort required cannot be in two places. The blockade’s success is measured by how rarely fuel moves, not by how much arrives when it does. Expect the figure to be used in Bamako as proof of control and in JNIM messaging as proof of siege; both readings fit it. The analytical community’s choice to frame October around Kidal rather than fuel is the tell: the specialists are watching territory, while the city watches the pumps.
