Washington tells Gulf allies to brace for renewed strikes on Iran once midterms pass

An AP report sourced to two anonymous diplomats says US officials have warned regional governments to expect a short campaign after next week’s elections — and Iranian retaliation against energy infrastructure.

The Associated Press, in a story by Aamer Madhani and Samy Magdy moved late on 28 October, reported that “U.S. officials have told several Middle East countries and regional allies to be prepared for potential renewed military action against Iran after next week’s midterm elections in the United States — as well as the possibility that Iran will attempt to retaliate against them, according to two diplomats briefed on the matter.” The same copy says Washington told allies the new round “could last for several days,” while regional officials brace for a fight that “could last even longer,” and that allies have been “urged by U.S. officials to take precautionary measures in anticipation that Iran’s response will include retaliatory strikes on energy facilities and other crucial infrastructure.” Both diplomats spoke anonymously, AP said, “because they were not authorized to comment about the sensitive warnings.” No official on either side is named; no US government confirmation appears in the report.

The most durable fact in the AP piece is the one that cuts against the alarm: the United States “has not carried out a strike against Iran since early September,” even as the Houthis have struck Saudi oil infrastructure and airports and a Saudi-led coalition has answered inside Yemen. A parallel version of the same briefing stream surfaced the same day under a different adjective: the Foundation for Defense of Democracies' 28 October overnight brief flagged a Wall Street Journal item, “U.S. warns Gulf of possible short, intense renewal of Iran war after midterms,” sourced to “people briefed on the conversations.” Jonathan Schanzer, executive director of FDD — described by AP as “a hawkish Washington think tank” — told the wire that Trump “may be looking at a postelection timeline for possible action, but the region is on edge that Tehran could do something provocative before then.”

Assessment: AP and the Journal are not two confirmations; they are two outlets standing downstream of one set of American briefings to Gulf capitals. That briefing is itself an instrument. Telling allies to harden energy infrastructure is simultaneously a warning, a deterrent signal to Tehran and a way of pricing a threat the United States may not intend to execute — and it costs nothing to leak before an election. The hull counts circulating in aggregation — a carrier strike group, a Marine expeditionary unit, some twenty warships — came to us via a diaspora outlet with no CENTCOM source attached, and we are not repeating them as fact. Watch deployments, not adjectives.
