The Planner and the Clock

Hegseth fires the Joint Staff’s top planner in the week before a possible post-midterm campaign

Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, director of Strategy, Plans and Policy, was removed over an investigation into leaks on Iran and Ukraine — the second officer stripped of that post under this war secretary.

The Pentagon cited “severe misconduct” in removing Sylvia, reported on 28–29 October, and said he had been under investigation for leaking classified information on Iran and Ukraine. Axios reported on 29 October that Sylvia acknowledged the misconduct on video after failing four polygraph tests, attributing that account to a single unnamed US official; it has not been corroborated elsewhere. AP and PBS note he is the second general removed from the J5 post under War Secretary Pete Hegseth, who, per Al Jazeera, has cut the number of US generals and admirals by 20 percent and stood up an autonomous warfare command. The Washington Post reported the firing on 28 October against the backdrop of Trump weighing new strikes on Iran.

The timing is what places this on the Iran desk. Trump posted on Truth Social in early October, per Al Jazeera, that he would not order a resumption of strikes before the 3 November midterms. AP reported that US officials have told Middle East partners to prepare for possible renewed action after that date, with no final decision taken. US officials cited in JINSA’s 24–26 October update say enough assets are now in theatre to launch major operations within 96 hours of an order; CNBC named the deeply buried Pickaxe Mountain site as a potential target on 26 October. Hegseth’s visit to Israel this week to discuss renewed joint strikes, and the claim that the plans target petrochemical and nuclear facilities, appeared in an Al Jazeera opinion column rather than a news report, and should be read accordingly.

Assessment: Two readings compete and the day does not settle between them. One: an officer at the centre of Iran and Ukraine planning was leaking, and was caught. Two: the J5 chair has become the seat from which this Pentagon’s war planning is contested, and the second occupant to lose it in short order is evidence of friction over what happens after Tuesday. The polygraph detail — four failures, a videotaped admission — comes from one anonymous official to one outlet, and is precisely the kind of detail that makes a dismissal look clean. Watch whether a successor is named before 3 November. A vacancy left open through the window the AP describes would say more than the firing does.
