Shin Bet chief asks to interrogate Arab lawmakers, then declines to show the attorney general why

David Zini sought authorisation to question four senior Arab political figures over alleged Qatari and Turkish election funding. Gali Baharav-Miara asked for the evidence; by Times of Israel’s account, she received it for one of them.

i24NEWS reported on Tuesday that Shin Bet director David Zini is seeking authorisation to question four senior Arab political figures under caution over suspected Qatar- and Turkey-linked election influence funding. Ynet named three: Mansour Abbas of Ra’am, Ahmad Tibi of Ta’al and Sami Abu Shehadeh of Balad, alongside an unnamed senior lawmaker. Times of Israel supplied the procedural detail that defines the story: Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara asked to see the evidence before ruling on the interrogations, and the Shin Bet produced it only for the unnamed lawmaker, not for the three named politicians. Times of Israel called the outcome “a rare public rebuke of the security chief from the attorney general, who accused him of subverting democratic norms.” Haaretz, updating at 23:53 Tuesday, reported that Zini is withholding material despite an agreement with the elections committee to hand it over, and withheld it from police as well.

The reaction split along the lines the election drew. The Joint List accused Zini of acting as a “political arm” for Netanyahu. Gadi Eisenkot, leader of Yashar and the man currently counting more endorsements than Netanyahu, said Likud is leading a “pogrom against democracy.” Likud accused Baharav-Miara of attempting to “whitewash” the probe. Haaretz quoted unnamed sources comparing Zini’s conduct to that of a “North Korean dictator” — an anonymous and hostile characterisation this desk reports but does not adopt. Running underneath the interrogation fight, per Ynet’s deck, is a second dispute: the attorney general has also opposed granting the Shin Bet sweeping security powers in the matter. The Jerusalem Post’s live file separately logged a court releasing a sixth Ra’am vote-buying suspect; that item is unconfirmed elsewhere.

Assessment: The fraud claim and the certification fight are one mechanism, not two stories. A probe that cannot be closed is more useful to Likud than a probe that is proved — it sustains the “dark cloud” line indefinitely while the committee chair, the attorney general and apparently the police are left arguing about documents they have not been shown. Watch who holds the evidence rather than who makes the allegation. The unnamed fourth lawmaker is the tell: that is the one case where material was produced, and the three names leaked to Ynet are the three where it was not.
