Netanyahu and Katz Announced the Beaufort Demolition; Only Lebanon’s News Agency Described the Blast

Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz announced in a joint statement late Thursday night that the military had blown up a Hezbollah tunnel system beneath the Beaufort Ridge in southern Lebanon. Al Jazeera and Arab News both carried the IDF’s figure of 700 tonnes of explosives, a claim that has not been independently verified. The military said the network was built over two decades, served as a central command centre for Hezbollah’s Bader Unit, was planned and funded by Iran, and that dozens of drones and missiles were launched from it during the war; the work was carried out during what it called limited activity in the security zone. Lebanon’s National News Agency reported very powerful explosions around midnight near Beaufort Castle, known locally as Qalat al-Shaqif, which shattered windows in homes in the town of Qlayaa. Haaretz logged the Lebanese president and prime minister condemning the strikes.

The timing is the part worth holding. Israel agreed in June to a phased withdrawal from Lebanon with the Lebanese army responsible for disarming Hezbollah, and Israeli and Lebanese delegations are preparing for US-brokered talks; Rubio used the same Camp David cabinet meeting to tout the administration’s brokering between the two. The demolition and the Board of Peace disarmament announcement fall roughly twenty-four hours apart, on two tracks that both run through Washington. All Israel News framed the operation as retaliation for a drone strike violating the ceasefire; The Files could not verify that predicate incident, and neither the joint statement nor the IDF’s own account, as reported, rests on it.

Assessment: An operation announced by two politicians rather than the spokesman’s unit is an operation intended to be read at home. The 700-tonne figure does the work: it is large, memorable, unfalsifiable from outside, and it converts a demolition into a scoreboard entry at the moment Netanyahu is being accused from his own flank of capitulating in Gaza. Beirut’s complaint about the ceasefire is real but structurally weak — the June arrangement assigned Hezbollah’s disarmament to the Lebanese army, and every month that passes without it supplies Israel a standing rationale.
