A filmed assault in Jalud produced eight headlines, and three contained no Palestinian at all

On 29 August in Jalud, south of Nablus, a four-person NBC News team was attacked while interviewing Aida Ahmed Abdullah, who said settlers had driven her family from their home. Per NBC’s account, a grey car with Israeli plates reversed up the hill toward the crew, a masked man in a blue tracksuit leaning from the rear window with a stick; at least four men in dark clothes with covered faces got out and struck Abdullah and the crew with sticks and threw rocks. Correspondent Matt Bradley, hit twice in the arm, told NBC: “They jumped out, beat us, then jumped back in the car.” Producer Lawahez Jabari told Mediaite she “saw a gun” but that the attackers “didn’t use the gun.” The same day, per WAFA relayed by the Times of Israel, two sisters near Silwad — Alia and Mona Mahmoud Hamed, 65 and 75 — were wounded and robbed while picking figs.

The headlines are where the day’s coverage separates. NBC led with the victim it interviewed: “Palestinian woman and NBC News team attacked by masked Israeli settlers in West Bank.” Haaretz was the only outlet in our sample to put Palestinians before journalists and to use “Dozens”: “Dozens of Masked Israeli Settlers Wound Palestinians, Attack Foreign Journalists in West Bank.” WAFA, the official Palestinian agency, wrote “colonists” rather than settlers. Al Jazeera’s newsfeed headline — “Israeli settlers attack international news team in occupied West Bank” — dropped Abdullah entirely, though it alone used “occupied.” Mediaite, a media-trade outlet writing about colleagues, routed a filmed assault through a claim verb: “NBC News Team Reports Being Attacked By Settlers.” KYMA, a Scripps affiliate in Yuma, deleted the agent altogether: “CAUGHT ON CAMERA: NBC crew and Palestinian woman attacked in West Bank.” Three of the eight headlines we counted contain no Palestinian.

Two on-the-record statements followed. Benjamin Netanyahu condemned “criminal acts of violence committed in the villages of Kosra and Jalud by a handful of rioters who violate the law, cause enormous injustice to the law-abiding settler public, hinder the IDF in fulfilling its missions and harm Israel’s standing in the world.” The injured parties, in his order: the law, the settler public, the IDF, Israel’s standing. No Palestinian appears, and the PMO’s transliteration — “Kosra” — differs from the Qusra used in the copy quoting it. Israeli security forces said they “strongly condemn all forms of violence” and that “IDF soldiers and Israel Border Police forces continue to operate in the areas of Qusra and Jalud.” Haaretz, alone in our sample, reported that soldiers in Qusra were filmed shielding a building where Palestinian workers had sheltered but did not detain or identify the masked settlers, despite an order criminalising face coverings in the West Bank.

Assessment: The inversion is the subject. A day of dispersed violence — Jalud, Qusra, Arraba, two elderly women near Silwad — acquired a single Western narrative frame only because a Western crew was in it, and even then the frame degraded in transit: agent named at the originating desk, hedged at the trade outlet, deleted by the syndicating affiliate. Note also what the day’s biggest finding was not about. The enforcement failure Haaretz reports — masked men not identified under an order that criminalises the masks — is the load-bearing claim, and it sits in one Israeli paper behind a paywall. Two caveats for readers. We could not surface BBC, Guardian, NYT, AP or Reuters URLs for this incident in our window; that is a gap in our search returns, not a proven editorial silence, and we are not asserting the latter. And the OCHA ratio below is second-hand via NBC and stops five weeks before these events.
