Hedged and Unhedged

In one AP file, the Israeli military is attributed twice and the Houthis are “Iranian-backed” on nobody’s authority

The same 20 September roundup that carefully sourced both West Bank killings to Israeli officials described the Houthis with an unattributed epithet — and gave a ballistic missile fired at Riyadh a single clause.

The AP roundup retrieved on 20 September attributes the Israeli account of both West Bank deaths in its captions: a shooting that “according to Israeli officials, killed one Israeli near the settlement of Neve Tzuf,” and a scene “where the military said it killed a Palestinian man who attempted to carry out a ramming attack.” Two claims, two attributions. The same file then reads: “Meanwhile, Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait condemned Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen after they fired a ballistic missile at the Saudi capital.” No source is given for “Iranian-backed” — it is AP’s standing epithet, applied as fact in a paragraph where every other contested assertion is carried by a speaker. The asymmetry is not about whether the characterisation is accurate. It is about which descriptions a wire desk thinks require an author.

Assessment: The roundup format is doing part of the work here. “And other Mideast developments” is a container in which a missile on a Gulf capital becomes a subordinate clause under a West Bank headline, and in which epithets survive editing that individual claims would not. Read from the Gulf, the ledger reverses: the escalation that dominates regional front pages is the line AP had room for at the bottom. THE FILES has confirmed only the sentence quoted above; the surrounding Yemen story — including Houthi warnings to states joining Saudi Arabia, reported by Haaretz on 21 September — is a lead this desk has not yet reported out.
