Rival drone strikes claimed in North Kordofan on Friday, neither independently verified

Sudan Tribune, dateline El Obeid, reported three separate items from Friday 25 September. North Kordofan authorities said an RSF drone hit a displacement shelter and civilian infrastructure in El Obeid, killing two people and wounding 20. Separately, an alliance allied with the RSF said a SAF drone struck Al-Mazrub in the same state, killing nine and wounding 24 — a partisan claim, which Sudan Tribune’s own headline hedged with “group says.” And military authorities, together with unspecified “field sources,” said the armed forces and allied fighters had recaptured the town of Sodari in western North Kordofan. Each of the three rests on an interested party. No wire confirmation appeared in the sweep, and no RSF or Tasis statement for the window was retrieved.

The pattern is better established than any single incident. A syndicated wire feature carried in identical text by Arab News on 24 September and TimesLive on 25 September documented an RSF escalation of drone attacks on frontline cities, including a strike on a crowded courtroom in the government-held town of Um Ruwaba on 8 September, and a photographed lecture hall with a collapsed roof at El Obeid’s College of Development and Technological Sciences. Middle East Eye, reporting earlier in September, framed the El Obeid drone campaign as the RSF’s answer to significant battlefield defeats rather than to battlefield success. El Obeid’s population was put at roughly 500,000 by Al Jazeera in July, with some 100,000 displaced people hosted there, per CNN and The Africa Report.

Assessment: Two things to hold apart. Claimed casualty figures from combatants in a state where neither side permits independent access are propaganda inputs first and data second; the symmetry of Friday’s two claims — nine dead from one side’s telling, two from the other’s, both by drone, both in North Kordofan — is the tell that both commands now see civilian-harm reporting as a lever. Sodari is the item to watch. A SAF recapture on the western approaches cuts against the siege-tightening story around El Obeid, which is precisely why a Friday communiqué would say it. If no wire carries it by midweek, treat it as messaging. The open question is whether the drone tempo is a steady state or preparatory fire.
