The Threshold Arithmetic

Gantz quits the race and the Israeli right immediately starts counting its own wasted votes

Blue and White held eight seats and was polling below the threshold. Within hours of the withdrawal, Sa’ar and Smotrich were warning small right-wing parties about the same arithmetic.

Benny Gantz announced on Monday 19 October, eight days before the vote, that he would not run. Arutz Sheva carried the flash at 16:20 Israel time; Gantz confirmed it that evening at a press conference at Kfar Maccabiah in Ramat Gan. Blue and White held eight seats in the outgoing 25th Knesset and had polled consistently below the electoral threshold. “I will not run in the upcoming election,” he said, in the Jerusalem Post’s account. “I will continue fighting for unity. It is the only solution that will prevent another disaster and protect Israel against all challenges, at home and abroad.” The Media Line quoted him saying he had “never abandoned a battle” and would not turn his back on the battle for unity, and conceding: “Unfortunately at this time I did not succeed in convincing enough of the people of our path and the responsibility is mine.”

Gadi Eisenkot, Gantz’s former deputy chief of staff and now leader of Yashar, thanked him for the “correct and responsible decision to withdraw from the most consequential elections since the establishment of the State of Israel.” Yoaz Hendel of the Reservists–Economic Party wrote on X that the withdrawal was “what is right and necessary for the country,” and used it to court non-aligned voters. On the coalition side the reading was purely arithmetic. Gideon Sa’ar of New Hope: “The cost of wasting right-wing votes in these elections could be catastrophic.” Bezalel Smotrich issued similar warnings. The Times of Israel’s liveblog item on the reaction was titled “Coalition urges small right-wing parties to follow Gantz’s lead.”

Assessment: The eulogies for Gantz’s career are the least interesting part of this. What Monday actually exposed is that both blocs now believe the 27 October result turns on threshold spoilage rather than persuasion, and the coalition said so out loud within ninety minutes of the announcement. Treat with care the statement the Times of Israel reported attributing the move to not wasting votes for the left-wing bloc: the paper itself notes Gantz never identified with the left or with the anti-Netanyahu parties, and the attribution in the snippet is unclear. On whose instruction small right-wing lists fold, and whether any do before the ballot deadline, is the story to track for the rest of the week.
