Hegseth lands at Ovda, sees Netanyahu, and posts only about the troops

The US defence secretary’s unannounced meeting with the Israeli prime minister on 19 October was broken by Axios on two sources and later confirmed by Netanyahu’s spokesman. It followed Trump’s public endorsement of Netanyahu days before the vote.

Axios, citing two sources with knowledge of the meeting, reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met Netanyahu at Ovda Air Base in southern Israel on Monday 19 October. Al Jazeera reported that the Israeli prime minister’s spokesman subsequently confirmed the visit, moving it from single-sourced claim to confirmed event. Military Times, citing officials, said Iran was on the agenda. Hegseth himself posted on social media about visiting US service members — he publicised the troop stop, not the meeting with Netanyahu. The Washington Post’s version framed the timing as coming as the Trump administration weighs new strikes against Iran after November’s US midterms; the Philadelphia Inquirer reported the administration has expressed growing frustration in recent weeks as diplomacy has failed to produce a lasting deal to end the war on Iran.

The visit lands inside a campaign Trump has already entered. Per the Times of Israel’s 16 October liveblog, the president said Netanyahu is “the only candidate who won’t leave Washington alone in fight against Iran,” and Netanyahu urged voters to take note; on 19 October the paper’s liveblog carried Netanyahu invoking Iran in a call with Trump after the endorsement under the line “We have a job to finish.” Haaretz reported the same day that the leaders of the parties seeking to unseat Netanyahu continued to criticise the president for picking sides while being careful in how they did so. Al Jazeera’s Iran liveblog for 20 October reported Tehran warning that a US attack would mean “destruction” throughout the region.

Assessment: The informational tell here is what was and was not advertised. A defence secretary who posts about a troop visit and not about the prime minister he saw at the same base is managing two audiences: an American one that did not vote for a pre-election photograph, and an Israeli one that reads the leak as the photograph. Axios’s two sources did the work the camera was not allowed to do. Treat the Iran agenda as officials' characterisation, not a readout. The operative question for the final week is whether Netanyahu’s opponents can attack the endorsement without appearing to attack Washington — so far they have chosen the narrower target.
