A Call, Disclosed

Netanyahu says he phoned Sharaa during the Sweida killings; Damascus answers anonymously

Speaking at a Likud rally in the Druze town of Yarka, the Israeli prime minister described the first acknowledged leader-level contact with Syria’s president. Damascus has not confirmed it.

Benjamin Netanyahu told a Likud election rally for Israel’s Druze community in Yarka on Thursday 15 October that he had spoken directly by telephone with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. “I called al-Sharaa. It was a very short, very sharp conversation, and the slaughter stopped,” he said in footage aired by Israel’s public broadcaster KAN and picked up by Asharq Al-Awsat and The New Arab; i24NEWS rendered the same remarks as “I spoke with al-Sharaa… the massacre stopped,” and The Media Line as “I picked up the phone to Sharaa.” He added, per i24NEWS: “I will do whatever is necessary to protect our Druze brothers. There is still work to be done. I cannot reveal everything.” Netanyahu did not say when the call took place. The Week and the Times of Israel place it in July 2025, during the Sweida violence and after Israeli strikes on the Syrian Defence Ministry and near the presidential palace; Asharq Al-Awsat and The New Arab say only that he implied it.

Three qualifications travel with the disclosure. It is claimed by one party: nothing retrieved shows a Syrian confirmation that the call happened. It was made at a campaign event, to a Druze audience, with Israel’s general election under way. And the death toll it is attached to is large — The New Arab cites the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights count of more than 2,000 killed in the July 2025 Sweida violence, including 789 Druze civilians. Hours later, at 21:42 Damascus time on 15 October, SANA published a statement attributed to an unnamed “official source” saying the Druze of Sweida “have been, and will remain, an integral and inseparable part of the national fabric of the Syrian Arab Republic,” and rejecting “any attempt to politicize this.” SANA did not describe it as a reply to Netanyahu.

Assessment: The disclosure is worth more as a campaign artefact than as a diplomatic record. Netanyahu is selling Druze voters a protector’s biography, and the claim that one phone call halted a massacre is unfalsifiable by design — no Syrian side has to agree for it to work in Yarka. What it does reveal is that a channel exists and that Israel judged it useful to say so now. Damascus’s reply is equally calculated: anonymous, state-media, and framed around national fabric rather than around Israel. Note also the loose end — Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani’s accusation on 13 October that Israel is arming and funding groups in Sweida reached us only through Prensa Latina, the Cuban state agency. The press conference is confirmed; the charge is not.
