Fifty-three and Forty-eight

Neither bloc can reach 61, and the Israeli press is already writing the second election

Herzog’s first round of consultations ended with Eisenkot leading in endorsements but no one holding a majority. The Times of Israel suggests the way out may run through the White House.

The certified arithmetic leaves Netanyahu’s bloc at 53 seats, the Eisenkot-led opposition bloc at 48 and the Arab parties at 19, against the 61 needed for a majority — figures carried by the Times of Israel and Ynet from the Central Elections Committee count and by Al Jazeera on 29 October. By the Times of Israel’s own reckoning the prime minister’s bloc lost 15 seats from the outgoing Knesset while Arab representation nearly doubled. Turnout was 77.97 per cent, up 7.34 points; the Israel Policy Forum’s tracker calls it a rate not seen since 1999, and records that Donald Trump openly endorsed Netanyahu in the penultimate week of the campaign, which it describes as an unprecedented intervention in Israeli politics. Likud took 27 seats, down nine; Eisenkot’s new Yashar party 21; Bennett’s Together 12, down twelve.

After Herzog’s first round of consultations on Wednesday, the Jerusalem Post’s live file recorded RZP-Zehut and Shas backing Netanyahu and Yisrael Beytenu backing Eisenkot, while Haaretz reported that Eisenkot leads in endorsements. The ultra-Orthodox position cannot be read as a single bloc: Al Jazeera reported that the ultra-Orthodox broke with Netanyahu over the coalition’s failure to pass Haredi draft-exemption legislation, which is reconcilable with Shas’s recommendation only if the Haredi parties are split, and that split has not been confirmed faction by faction. Incoming Otzma Yehudit MK Tally Gotliv on 2 November urged Bennett and Avigdor Liberman to join a broad right-wing government. The Times of Israel’s own framing is blunter: neither man has an obvious avenue to a government, putting Israel on the path to a costly second vote.

Hebrew-language front pages — Israel Hayom, Yedioth, Maariv, Kan 11 — were outside this desk’s reach this week, as were the Gaza, Lebanon and West Bank files. Nothing here should be read as a survey of those.

Assessment: Endorsement counts are not governments. Eisenkot leading in recommendations means little while the 19 Arab seats remain outside every coalition formula both camps will admit to in public — which is what makes the fraud claim and the Shin Bet file operational rather than rhetorical. The line to watch is the Times of Israel’s suggestion that the exit runs through the White House: after an open presidential endorsement during the campaign, Washington is now a domestic actor in Israeli coalition bargaining, and any American-brokered formula will be sold in Jerusalem as a national necessity rather than as what it is.
