Abdel Fattah el-Sisi told state television on Saturday that Egypt is ready to take any measure Riyadh asks of it. His parliament was summoned to an emergency session on Sunday, then pushed the question to Monday. It is being asked in the fortnight that Suez container traffic finally crossed half of its pre-disruption volume, and the month a $5.4bn Saudi deposit at the central bank matures. Egypt is being invited to fight for a sea lane it has only just begun to earn from again.

Sisi asked parliament for authorisation to send military assistance if Riyadh requests it. The House postponed the discussion to Monday, and the scope of what is being authorised has not been published.

Clarksons data relayed by BIMCO show weekly transiting capacity at 753,000 TEU in early October. Carriers are returning to the canal while the war that emptied it widens.

Canal revenue is up 29 percent over seven months and reserves have passed $57 billion for the first time. Neither figure settles the question the Fund has asked Cairo to answer by end-September.

The Saudi crown prince met Sisi on Tuesday under a maritime-security banner. No money was announced — and the shipping threat the wires attribute to the visit remains unconfirmed by this desk.

Egypt says it will not allow new Ethiopian dams on the Blue Nile. The projects remain at the planning stage, and Egypt’s own IMF-agreed water-governance deadline has passed without public confirmation it was met.

A sell-side scenario set published in Cairo on Friday ties the pound, the current account and a possible $4bn financing gap to a waterway 2,000km from Egyptian territory.
