Xi Jinping’s first Egypt visit in a decade produced a joint communiqué, a new phase of the Chinese industrial zone on the canal, and — on one English-language account — Chinese language on Egypt’s Nile water access.

Egypt’s net international reserves hit $56.29bn in July on a 47-month rising streak. The Fund’s arrangement runs out on 15 December, and the Suez Canal Authority’s own revenue guidance now requires a 71% jump.

The first Chinese state visit to Egypt in ten years produced five formal agreements, more than twenty cooperation documents and no published price. The one hard number in the file belongs to Chinese customs.

A single line in the China–Egypt joint statement backs protecting Cairo’s access to Nile waters. It is the most consequential sentence of the visit and the one least likely to bind anybody.

Confirmed: the arrival, the protocol, the 70th-anniversary staging. Not confirmed: any of the agreements Egyptian media say will be signed on Wednesday.

Four quarters at the second quarter’s pace lands around $5bn. The Suez Canal Authority’s own projection for FY2026/27 is eight.

US Central Command says it struck Iranian launchers dispersing sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz on 30 August. Egypt’s canal authority chose the same week to say container traffic is rising, without publishing a number.

Country Report 26/69 requires Egypt to deliver a final status report by end-September on a corrective action plan, including any regulatory breaches identified. Disbursements now total $7.3bn.

Al-Monitor reported on Sunday that Karadobi, Mandaya and Beko Abo together would generate more power than the dam Egypt spent a decade failing to stop. The week’s other Nile story — a demand that Cairo pay for water — came from a former Ethiopian official, not the Ethiopian state.

The Suez Canal Authority’s own carrier numbers show ship counts approaching pre-crisis levels while cargo weight runs at a fraction of it. That gap, not the return announcements, is what the balance of payments will feel.

China’s foreign ministry, not Egypt’s presidency, put the dates in public. The visit lands in the final months of a three-year Egypt–China work plan that nobody has yet said will be renewed.

Egypt says it will not allow new Ethiopian dams on the Blue Nile. The projects remain at the planning stage, and Egypt’s own IMF-agreed water-governance deadline has passed without public confirmation it was met.

A sell-side scenario set published in Cairo on Friday ties the pound, the current account and a possible $4bn financing gap to a waterway 2,000km from Egyptian territory.

CAPMAS data show $1.26bn in Q2 receipts and 3,580 transits, of which 1,526 were tankers. The recovery is in crude reroutings, not in the return of the box lines.

CAPMAS figures show tanker transits and quarterly canal earnings recovering, but the driver is the shutdown of Hormuz rather than any return of safety to the Red Sea.

The Extended Fund Facility now expires on 14 December. Reserves are at an all-time high, growth is beating the Fund’s own forecast, and nobody in Cairo or Washington has said what follows.

The Egyptian presidency said only that Xi was coming “in the coming days.” China’s foreign ministry supplied the itinerary the same day: 30 August to 3 September, taking in the SCO summit in Bishkek and state visits to Kyrgyzstan and Egypt.

Canal receipts hit $1.26 billion in the second quarter, up 13% on the first. The recovery rests on tankers rerouted by a closure Egypt neither caused nor controls — and on destination data that is being deliberately falsified.
