Lloyd’s List Intelligence counted 290 transits at the northern chokepoint in the last week of August — 30% above 2025, and still 36% below normal. The recovery is real and structurally incomplete.

Xi Jinping’s first Egypt visit in a decade produced a joint communiqué, a new phase of the Chinese industrial zone on the canal, and — on one English-language account — Chinese language on Egypt’s Nile water access.

Egypt’s net international reserves hit $56.29bn in July on a 47-month rising streak. The Fund’s arrangement runs out on 15 December, and the Suez Canal Authority’s own revenue guidance now requires a 71% jump.

Canal receipts hit $1.26 billion in the second quarter, up 13% on the first. The recovery rests on tankers rerouted by a closure Egypt neither caused nor controls — and on destination data that is being deliberately falsified.
